Well, I’m not quite sure how to even pronounce the name of this editor — is it supposed to sound like H.T.M.L. or HATE em el? I guess it doesn’t matter because I won’t be using it anyway. Ok, that’s a bit harsh, but it’s also true. HateML doesn’t bring anything new to the HTML editor scene, and what it does bring doesn’t eclipse what’s already out there. Same old, same old. While there isn’t necessarily a lot of room for innovation in the editor world, there certainly is some room. Look at Coda, for example. Or, if innovation isn’t your bag, then at least grab some of the best features from other editors, as e has done, giving Windows users TextMate snippets and bundles. Don’t get me wrong: HateML isn’t a bad editor; it just doesn’t stand out in an incredibly crowded market.

Review: Adobe GoLive CS2
Editor: Adobe GoLive CS2
Version: 8.0.1
Developer: Adobe
Platform/OS: Windows/Mac
WYSIWYG: Yes
Price: $399 USD
I’d never really given Adobe GoLive much thought. Sure, it came bundled with CS2, but I already had a couple editors to choose from. On paper, GoLive CS2 is an amazing-looking product, full of great features. In practice, however, the program falls a bit short. To be fair, I’m not exactly GoLive’s target market — I prefer hand-coding to WYSIWYG editing. At the same time, the product could offer more of a balance (the way Dreamweaver does) between visual editing and source editing.

Developer: Bluefish Developers
Platform/OS: Linux/GTK

One of the reasons I wanted to set up Linux on my computer again was to take a closer look at Bluefish, the free, GTK-based editor. I’d tried a beta version a year or so ago, more for fun than anything, and I remembered it being a fairly pleasing experience. So, I was excited to try it again, this time for the sake of proper evaluation. The result? I’m still excited. Not because It’s made me want to switch over to Linux, but because of its potential.

Review: AceHTML Pro 6

Platform/OS: Windows
WYSIWYG: No

Price: $74.95 CAD
Admittedly, I was rooting for AceHTML Pro 6 since I discovered it was created by a Canadian company – the first HTML editor I’ve found that is. I evaluated the 30-day demo of AceHTML Pro, and while it offers many of the options included in other editors, I found the demo itself a bit buggy. For example, the 30 day limit never counted down, making me wonder if the demo would actually expire; as well, some of my settings reset each time I started the program (code helper delay, for instance), which was rather annoying. AceHTML Pro does, however, contain some features I haven’t seen anywhere else, including a To Do List manager and the ability to highlight code (as if with a highlighter pen).
