Tools of the Trade: BookIt & Foxmarks
One thing I typically don’t like about running multiple computers, OSes, and web browsers is, when I bookmark something in one browser, not having access to that bookmark in all my other browsers. Yes, there’s del.icio.us, but I want something integrated into the bookmark toolbar for all the browsers I use. My solution? BookIt + Foxmarks.
BookIt ($12) is a Mac app that helps you sync bookmarks between all your browsers by comparing all the bookmarks you have, letting you organize and edit them, and finally creating an identical bookmark file for each browser. I love this because I can use Safari for my daily browsing and Firefox for web development and have all my bookmarks in both browsers.
But what if you have other computers? For me, that’s where Foxmarks comes into play. Foxmarks is a free Firefox add-on that automatically synchronizes your bookmarks between two or more computers running Firefox. After you install the add-on on one computer, you set up a free account, and then install the add-on onto your other computers running Firefox. Foxmarks then runs in the background and keeps your bookmarks up to date. So, now, my iMac, my Windows laptop, and my Windows XP virtual machine all have the same set of bookmarks, and bookmarks created on any one of these machines get synced with the others.
