Reader Question: e vs WeBuilder / Coda for Windows?
Heiko wrote in to ask:
Up to now I’ve been using Dreamweaver and TopStyle (for CSS), but now I’m looking to replace DW with either ‘e Text Editor’ or ‘WeBuilder’. a) Which of the two would you recommend for a novice like me who doesn’t venture out beyond Web Standards (HTML & CSS), plus a little PHP and Javascript. b) You mentioned that you use CODA on your Mac for FTP, remote site management and live edits. Which is the best program to use on a PC? I do not mind to pay for a good program (Dreamweaver was very user friendly when it comes to uploading files).
I’d like other reader feedback/recommendations on this, but I’d probably say:
a) WeBuilder, because of its code hinting. As you continue to learn and become more comfortable with HTML/CSS/PHP/Javascript, you might prefer e Text Editor because you’ll have memorized various tags and attributes, but for now, having code hints will probably help immensely.
b) I’m not sure about this. Both e and WeBuilder have some built in FTP functionality, though I haven’t used either. When I was in Windows, I used FTP Voyager because it has a decent sync feature, similar to Dreamweaver’s.
All the software mentioned have trial periods. I’d suggest downloading them and seeing which you’re most comfortable with.

I know no one cares, but I’ll still say that HTML-Kit is the best Windows program for doing live edits on FTP servers.

WeBuilder is an awesome xhtml/css text editor. I have programed in 7 languages for the past 25 years and webuilder is everthing I expect in a code editor.
A new version of WeBuilder is coming out in May.

The new WeBuilder has: 1) rightClick editing of tags – just like the glorious Homesite 2) SFTP – support
