Similar to the e Text Editor, Intype is a Windows take on the Mac-only TextMate. An early take. In fact, the software is still in the Alpha stage, having only recently materialized out of vaporware status. But it’s coming along nicely, featuring TextMate’s minimalist interface, themes, and trademark bundles and snippets.
What I Like
- If you’ve used TextMate for the Mac, Intype is going to feel pretty familiar. It seems like essentially a Windows clone of TextMate.
- Two of TextMate’s best features — bundles and snippets — have already been implemented, and many of the shortcuts are the same as in the original.
- I’m a fan of TextMate’s simple look, and it works for Intype on Windows as well.
- I love the ability to easily change the themes for my editor, and Intype has provided a number of ports of TextMate themes in this latest release.
- The Intype team has a very nice website with a blog and user forum already set up.
Gripes
Intype is still Alpha, so there are probably tons of features that haven’t made it in yet, but you should be aware of them if you plan on trying Intype.
- Intype can only handle one document at a time. If you want to open another document, you have to open another instance of Intype first, then open a second document.
- I’m a bit confused by the following statement from the Intype FAQ: “Intype is not a TextMate clone or port. We really like TextMate and it inspired us a lot. And altough [sic] Intype is using the same terminology as TextMate, it is [sic] completely different editor.” I don’t really agree; seems like a clone to me, but you can see for yourself.
- There aren’t many changeable preferences at this point.
- Not surprisingly, there is no documentation.
- Search and replace haven’t been implemented yet.
- Two of my favourite TextMate features, column selection and editing, aren’t currently available.
- There’s no auto-complete for parentheses.
Overall
As an Alpha product, Intype is quite nice and it should just keep getting better and better. While I’m a little baffled by the developers’ attempt to verbally distance Intype from TextMate while basically copying TextMate’s functionality, I’m happy that there are going to be a few TextMate-style editors available for Windows users in the near future. Should you try it? Only for the sake of curiosity. As an Alpha product, it’s certainly not ready for a production environment. But it will be, and hopefully soon.
