Celebrity Interview: Jon Hicks

Jon Hicks is a freelance print and online designer based in Oxfordshire, UK. You may remember him from such logos as Firefox, Thunderbird, and Stylemaster.

1. What OS/platform do you primarily develop in?

I have both Macs running 10.4 and a PC running XP, but I do all my development on Mac. I can’t bear using Windows for very long.

2. What’s your (X)HTML editor of choice for coding websites?

Currently it’s skEdit, but Textmate is making a very close second.

3. How did you decide on this as your primary editor?

Several things. Code hinting (or ‘auto-complete’) and user definable snippets were the main draws, but it has other little touches like being able to preview images and see their dimensions. Very useful.

4. What’s the one (or more) feature of the software you couldn’t live without?

Code hinting. Dreamweaver does this too, but in skEdit, it just works a whole a lot better. I only ever write CSS and HTML, and code hinting makes this SO quick.

5. If you were in charge of choosing new features for this piece of software, what feature(s) would you add?

The thing that draws me away from skEdit are Textmate’s features. Better text handling, snippets that have even more user control, and the oh-so-wonderful code folding ability. Generally, Textmate has more pre-configured shortcuts and snippets, but lacks code-hinting, which is vital to me.

6. Bonus Unrelated Question: What’s the best book you’ve read in the last year?
