Celebrity Interview: Cameron Adams

Cameron Adams (The Man in Blue) has a degree in law and one in science; naturally he chose a career in Web development. When pressed, he labels himself a “Web Technologist” because he likes to have a hand in graphic design, JavaScript, CSS, Perl (yes, Perl), and anything else that takes his fancy on a given morning. He has written a book – The JavaScript Anthology – which is one of the most complete question and answer resources on modern JavaScript techniques. Cameron lives in Melbourne, Australia, where – between coding marathons – he likes to play soccer and mix some tunes for his irate neighbours. Continue reading Celebrity Interview: Cameron Adams »

Review: TextMate

4.1 Out of 5

Editor: TextMate
Version: 1.5.1
Developer: Macromates
Platform/OS: Mac
WYSIWYG: No
Price: €39

textmateTouted as “The Missing Editor” for the Mac, TextMate isn’t even 2 years old yet, but it has already received an incredible amount of publicity, praise, and attention online. Strictly speaking, TextMate isn’t really an HTML editor; rather, it supports around 50 programming languages, including (X)HTML, CSS, and PHP (the languages I work in the most).

Review: skEdit 3.6.1

3.7 Out of 5

Editor: skEdit
Version: 3.6.1
Developer: Sean Kelly
Platform/OS: Mac
WYSIWYG: No
Price: $24.95 USD

skeditBefore I begin, I have to qualify this review by saying that I develop primarily in Windows and typically only use my Mac for browser testing. The websites I develop are XHTML/CSS-based and I often find myself working with PHP and MySQL. I haven’t spent a lot of time in OS X, so I’m not familiar with all the ins and outs of the os (the keyboard short-cuts, for example, or even some of the key symbols). All this is to say that a regular Mac user may have a different take on some of what I have to say about any software created specifically for this platform. Now that that’s out of the way…

When I think of skEdit, I am reminded of the story The Little Engine That Could. skEdit seems like the underdog HTML editor for the Mac — one that’s all heart; one that does a little and does it very well. If you write CSS and HTML, there’s a lot to like about skEdit, including code hinting/auto-complete, its snippets, and its terrific $24.95 USD price tag.

Review: AceHTML Pro 6

2.5 Out of 5

Editor: AceHTML Pro 6
Version: 6.50.0
Developer: Visicom Media
Platform/OS: Windows
WYSIWYG: No
License: Commercial/Shareware
Price: $74.95 CAD

Admittedly, I was rooting for AceHTML Pro 6 since I discovered it was created by a Canadian company – the first HTML editor I’ve found that is. I evaluated the 30-day demo of AceHTML Pro, and while it offers many of the options included in other editors, I found the demo itself a bit buggy. For example, the 30 day limit never counted down, making me wonder if the demo would actually expire; as well, some of my settings reset each time I started the program (code helper delay, for instance), which was rather annoying. AceHTML Pro does, however, contain some features I haven’t seen anywhere else, including a To Do List manager and the ability to highlight code (as if with a highlighter pen).
